The Leas South Shields

The Leas is a huge area of green belt land on the coast of South Shields. It is owned and maintained by the National Trust and is home to loads of different small wildlife creatures such as foxes, rabits, voles, birds and insects.

When you come to visit South Shields you must make time to walk the coastal path which runs from South Shields, past Marsden Rock, and on into Whitburn. All told, it’s about 5 or 6 miiles and a great way to get some exersise and see some beautiful sights as well.

The Leas is very popular with dog walkers and horse riders. When it’s windy you will see kite flyers out in their dozens. They range from the experts with amazing acrobatic kites pulling them along the ground on a board, to the novices flying their 99p kite bought that afternoon.

It’s also common to see people flying radio controlled aircraft on a nice day.

Whilst walking along the cliff tops, you will see some very secluded beaches. Some very small and rocky, but all very exciting and a great place to take the children exploring caves, nooks and crannies. It is very easy to imagine the smugglers from years past using these caves to hide their booty.
