The Groyne Lighthouse

Groyne lighthouse south shields The Groyne Lighthouse stands on Herd Groyne Pier on the South side of the mouth of the River Tyne and helps guide the ships in and out of the river. The pier was built in the late 1800’s to help stop the Littlehaven beach being swept into the river by the incoming tide.

You can walk along the pier all the way up to the Groyne, and then you realise the true magnatude of it.

This is a popular place for fishing and watching the ships come ond go.

If you like to look at boats and ships, this is the place for you. I have seen countless ships come into the River Tyne and when the Tall Ships come to the North East, you will not find a better riverside location.

Not far from the Groyne is the famous sculpture ‘Conversation Piece’ by the Spanish scultor Juan Manoz.
