I have just read about the warbler which has been seen in Trow Quarry. I wonder can you tell me where the name came from, was it named after someone famous? My maiden name was Trow, and I was born in Co. Durham, I wondered whether there is any connection.

    Hi Christine

    Thanks for stopping by.

The origin of the name Trow Quarry, or Trow Rocks, as we call it in South Shields is not clear cut as far as I can discover.

A trow was a type of boat, so it may stem from that since it is right on the sea front. Maybe boats used to anchor off shore and take the quarried rocks away.

Or, as you suggest, maybe it was named after a local person called Trow. You could have a distant relative and a cool connection to South Shields :)

If any other readers have an idea, then please let us know.

    Thanks
